A step-by-step guide on how to store fish in the fridge to retain its freshness and taste.
Fish tastes best when fresh. Sometimes if you are left with extra pieces or you buy in bulk it needs to be stored in the freezer. You can retain their freshness for upto a week if stored properly.
If you store them together they stick to each other and it becomes really difficult to separate them unless they are completely thawed. If you thaw and refrigerate it again and again they lose their freshness and become off-taste or stale. So in order to remove a few pieces at a time, depending on the number of family members, you need to store it accordingly.
Steps on how to store fish in the fridge.
Requirements: Glass/Steel container, a few banana leaves cut to the size of your container (You can use parchment paper if banana leaves are unavailable)
- Apply salt and spices as required to the fish. Do not store without spices and salt as it will taste stale. If you are storing for making curry or any other dish then you can apply salt, turmeric and store.
2. Now, in a glass container place a banana leaf or parchment paper. Place the number of pieces you would fry at a time. (We are a family of 3 hence I have placed 3 pieces in one layer)
3. Place another banana leaf over it and arrange more pieces. Do not press. Place lightly.
4. You can see the side-view in the picture below.
5. So when you want to fry, remove the container from the freezer. Just lift the top layer with the banana leaf and put back the container immediately into the freezer. Place the pieces under a fast fan or keep in a warm place to thaw them.
6. Fry the fish or use it in a recipe of your choice when it is completely thawed and at room temperature.
