Prawns curry, known as sungtache human in Konkani, is a rich and aromatic dish made with juicy prawns (fresh or frozen), coconut, red chillies, and coriander seeds. For instance, in this version, I’ve used raw mango and drumsticks, which lend a distinct taste and texture to the curry. How to prepare goan prawns curry (sungtache human)?

- Clean and devein the prawns. Also, apply a little salt and keep aside.


2. Cut each drumstick into 4-5 pieces. Peel the outer skin and then wash. Wash the raw mango well. Similarly, peel the skin, chop into pieces as shown below.




3. Take grated coconut, red chillies, coriander seeds and turmeric in a mixer. Grind to a fine paste.


4. Take the drumsticks and raw mango pieces in a pot. Also, add 1/4 tsp salt. Finally, add 3/4 cup of water and cook, covered, on a medium flame.



5. Once the drumsticks and raw mango are cooked, add the ground paste.


6. Add water to get the required consistency. Do not make the curry too watery. Also, add the prawns and mix well.


7. After adding prawns, add salt as per taste. Also add the slit green chilli.


8. Bring the curry to a rolling boil on high flame. Finally, switch off the gas. Cover and keep for about an hour before serving to infuse the flavours. Serve with hot steamed rice and fried fish.

1 tbsp = 15 ml
1 tsp = 5 ml
Prawns – 1 cup
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
Red chillies – 12-13 nos.
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Green chilli – 1 no. (slit)
Salt – as per taste
Water – as required (for grinding)
